California Statewide Mobile Monitoring Initiative

North Sacramento, Del Paso Heights, Norwood, and Old North Sacramento

Aclima and Sacramento EJC launch SMMI in North Sacramento communities

Del Paso Heights and Norwood are neighboring, diverse communities in North Sacramento, located within the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District. Residents here represent a mix of backgrounds and cultures, and the area is recognized for its strong community ties.

These neighborhoods face persistent air quality challenges, with monitoring data showing elevated levels of pollutants like nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and particulate matter along major corridors such as Marysville Boulevard and Norwood Avenue. Local sources, including heavy traffic and industrial activity, contribute to pollution burdens that impact public health, especially for children and older adults.

The district has teamed up with Aclima and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to launch a community air monitoring project guiding future actions as a part of SMMI. Using Aclima’s advanced sensors, the project collects detailed, block-by-block data on air quality throughout the community. This provides residents with clear information about local pollution and helps guide actions to improve air quality, focusing on the areas and people most affected.

In April 2025, residents, local organizations, and air district representatives gathered to discuss ongoing air quality concerns, review new monitoring efforts, and collaborate on solutions to improve health and environmental conditions in Del Paso Heights and Norwood.

Sacramento EJC

In 2021, the Sac-EJC was formed as a grassroots organization that was started by a coalition of diverse partners and community leaders.

Our purpose is to address the historical and structural racist policies that force people of color, the poor, and the marginalized to live in the most polluted neighborhoods in the Sacramento Valley.

About Aclima

Aclima operates mobile air quality sensors, collecting and analyzing pollution data, and working with communities to provide detailed, localized air quality insights that support health and environmental actions.
