Salton City
Aclima and United for Justice launch SMMI in Salton City
Salton City is a diverse and growing community located on the western shore of the Salton Sea in Imperial County, California, within the Imperial County Air Pollution Control District. With a population of over 6,200 residents-nearly three-quarters of whom are Hispanic or Latino-Salton City reflects a rich blend of cultures and backgrounds.
The community faces significant air quality challenges, largely due to dust and fine particles from the receding Salton Sea, as well as air pollution linked to nearby agricultural activities. These conditions contribute to higher rates of asthma and respiratory illness, impacting families and especially children.
The district has teamed up with Aclima and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to launch a community air monitoring project guiding future actions as a part of SMMI. Using Aclima’s advanced sensors, the project collects detailed, block-by-block data on air quality throughout the community. This provides residents with clear information about local pollution and helps guide actions to improve air quality, focusing on the areas and people most affected.
In March and April 2025, residents, local organizations, and stakeholders met to discuss ongoing concerns about air quality and to explore community-driven solutions for protecting public health and ensuring a healthier future for Salton City.
