California Statewide Mobile Monitoring Initiative

Gilroy

Gilroy is a vibrant and diverse city located in southern Santa Clara County which falls under the jurisdiction of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. With a population that reflects a rich blend of cultures, Gilroy is home to many Spanish-speaking families, as well as a growing number of immigrant and agricultural worker communities. This diversity is a source of strength, shaping the city’s identity and fostering a strong sense of community pride.

Despite its many assets, Gilroy faces significant environmental and public health challenges. The city is frequently impacted by extreme heat events, wildfire smoke, and elevated air pollution levels. These issues are compounded by Gilroy’s proximity to major highways and agricultural operations, which contribute to both local and regional air quality concerns. Low-income families, outdoor workers, children, and seniors are especially vulnerable to these environmental stressors, which can lead to higher rates of asthma, respiratory illness, and other health disparities.

The district has teamed up with Aclima and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to launch a community air monitoring project guiding future actions as a part of SMMI. Using Aclima’s advanced sensors, the project collects detailed, block-by-block data on air quality throughout the community. This provides residents with clear information about local pollution and helps guide actions to improve air quality, focusing on the areas and people most affected.

In April 2025, residents, community organizations, and local officials gathered for a public meeting to address these pressing issues.
