California Statewide Mobile Monitoring Initiative

Fairfield

Fairfield, served by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, is a vibrant and diverse city in Solano County, situated at the crossroads of the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley. The community is home to residents from a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, contributing to Fairfield’s dynamic character and strong sense of community.

Despite its many strengths, Fairfield faces ongoing environmental and public health challenges. The city experiences elevated levels of air pollution, particularly ozone and fine particulate matter, due to its location along major transportation corridors like Interstate 80 and State Route 12. Additional pollution sources include local industry and frequent wildfire smoke, which can further degrade air quality. These factors contribute to higher rates of asthma, respiratory illnesses, and cardiovascular disease, especially among children, seniors, and low-income families.

The district has teamed up with Aclima and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to launch a community air monitoring project guiding future actions as a part of SMMI. Using Aclima’s advanced sensors, the project collects detailed, block-by-block data on air quality throughout the community. This provides residents with clear information about local pollution and helps guide actions to improve air quality, focusing on the areas and people most affected.

In April 2025, residents, community organizations, and local leaders came together to address these pressing concerns. The meeting provided an opportunity for community members to share their experiences, learn about ongoing air monitoring efforts, and collaborate on strategies to create a healthier and more equitable future for everyone in Fairfield.
