West Modesto
West Modesto, including the Airport Neighborhood and South Modesto, is a predominantly Hispanic and Latino community in Stanislaus County, California. This area falls within the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, a region known for persistent air quality challenges. Many residents face economic hardship, with high poverty rates and a large percentage of young children.
Air pollution is a significant concern in Southwest Modesto, with residents regularly exposed to unhealthy ozone levels and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). ources of pollution include nearby industrial facilities, highways, agricultural operations, and local waste sites. These conditions contribute to high rates of asthma and other respiratory illnesses in the community.
The city has teamed up with Aclima and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to launch a community air monitoring project guiding future actions as a part of SMMI. Using Aclima’s advanced sensors, the project collects detailed, block-by-block data on air quality throughout the community. This provides residents with clear information about local pollution and helps guide actions to improve air quality, focusing on the areas and people most affected.
In April of 2025, local stakeholders and community organizations gathered to guide future actions, review monitoring efforts, and discuss strategies to improve Southwest Modesto's health and environment.
